20/12/2021 Milieu-ngo’s presenteren Eurocommissaris Sinkevi?ius een reusachtig pop-upboek dat het verhaal vertelt van de impact van bodemsleepnetten op het zeemilieu Photo and video available here Brussel – Een reusachtig, kleurrijk pop-upboek dat vertelt over de verwoesting veroorzaakt door destructieve bodemsleepnetten – en hoe het zeemilieu gedijt in de afwezigheid ervan – werd vanmorgen door ngo’s aan EU-commissaris Virginijus Sinkevi?ius bezorgd namens meer dan 150.000 [1] Europeanen die een petitie ondertekenden waarin de Europese Unie (EU) wordt opgeroepen om destructieve visserijpraktijken geleidelijk af te schaffen, te beginnen met een onmiddellijk verbod op bodemsleepnetten in alle mariene beschermde gebieden (MPA’s). De tienduizenden ondertekenaars eisen dat Eurocommissaris Sinkevi?ius (verantwoordelijk voor het milieu, de oceaan en de visserij) en de uitvoerend vicevoorzitter van de Europese Commissie Frans Timmermans (verantwoordelijk voor de EU Green Deal) een verbod op bodemsleepnetten opnemen in het komende EU ‘Actieplan voor de instandhouding van visbestanden en de bescherming van mariene ecosystemen’ (Oceaan Actieplan), dat naar verwachting volgend voorjaar zal worden aangenomen. Bodemsleepnetten, de meest schadelijke visserijmethode voor het milieu en het klimaat, worden veel gebruikt in Europa, waar deze meer dan 50% van de zeebodem aantasten.
