Una vista submarina

Today, we were able to go out with the tow camera for several hours thanks to having two additional boats in addition to our «houseboat and office.» The tow camera is a tool that helps us take stock of marine life in the Baltic Sea and is commonly used in Sweden and Finland. The camera allows you to cover a large area, although you won’t always be able to identify all the species you see in the video. It also gives you an idea of the vegetation, substrate, and conditions prevailing in each location. As the name suggests, the camera is anchored, or rather, lowered from the boat to film the bottom. The camera is usually hovered between half a meter and one meter above the seabed and can record an area of about 5 square meters. On the surface, a monitor allows you to see everything in real time. However, there’s no way to control the camera’s movements. Everything depends on weather conditions, such as waves, and a good pilot. This is the case in the Quark, a place famous for its numerous islands and islets and boulder-strewn waters, even in the most unexpected places. Today we filmed between 0.4 and 20 meters deep and saw a wide variety of substrates and vegetation, and even managed to record some fish and other benthic species. On good days, like today, using the anchor camera is the most relaxing thing in the world. The sun was shining… and each image gave us even more information about the world beneath the waters of the Quark.
