Why Marine Protected Areas matter
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are vital for protecting the oceans and addressing the threats it faces from overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. Since 2005, Oceana has conducted 31 at-sea research expeditions in the Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean seas. These efforts have helped protect marine habitats, restore degraded ecosystems, and establish new MPAs to safeguard marine biodiversity and foster sustainable fisheries. Here’s why Marine Protected Areas matter:
1. Commercial fish and marine life at risk without protection
Marine life, including commercial fish, depend on healthy habitats for spawning, shelter, nurseries, and food. Without protection, these species face growing threats from overfishing and climate change. MPAs provide safe spaces for fish populations and ecosystems to recover and thrive.
2. Preserving the ocean’s role as a carbon store
A healthy oceans absorbs large amounts of carbon, helping to fight climate change. MPAs protect critical habitats like seagrass meadows and mangroves, which in turn store carbon. By boosting the ocean’s ability to mitigate climate change, MPAs play a vital role in protecting the planet.
3. Safe havens for biodiversity
Deep-sea habitats, such as reefs, corals, and seamounts are biodiversity hotspots that support rare and unique species. These habitats are often fragile and vulnerable to destruction, putting them at risk of extinction. MPAs play a key role in preserving their critical ecosystem functions.
4. Supporting coastal communities
For coastal communities, the ocean is a source of culture, income, and food. MPAs help safeguard artisanal fishing areas and create sustainable tourism opportunities. Thriving marine life attracts eco-tourists, creates jobs and boosts local economies while preserving cultural heritage.
5. Ensuring food security for the future
A restored and healthy ocean can provide one billion people worldwide with seafood meals every day. By protecting marine biodiversity and helping rebuild fish stocks, MPAs contribute to global food security for future generations.
