A Postcard from Strasbourg: Make History, End Overfishing
As you may know, there is a big vote happening tomorrow in Strasbourg. Members of Parliament have a chance to make history , and we, along with our colleagues in the NGO community have been working hard for the past year and a half to spread the right information to the right people.
Just in case MEPs aren’t sure what our main asks are, we’ve been handing out this postcard in Strasbourg, which lays out our key asks. There are hundreds of amendments and we’ve spent hours poring through them to find which ones will put European fisheries on a path to sustainable wealth and which are short term and destructive.
The EU’s fishing industry is the fourth largest in the world and it provides around 6.4 million tonnes of fish each year. Fishing and fish processing provide jobs for more hundreds of thousands of Europeans. Yes, our oceans are in trouble, and the world’s population is rising at an unprecedented speed. But if we can manage our fisheries properly and restore this once bountiful resource, we can feed millions more in Europe and around the world, that’s why this vote is so critical.
