A picture says more than a thousand words

Since Oceana is a global organization you get to learn a lot about what’s going on in other parts of the world. Every week I get to see pictures from the beautiful Mediterranean or the rich waters off the coast of Chile, for example. Compared to these places my good old Baltic Sea is not as beautiful, at least not at first glance. Oceana’s underwater footage of the Baltic shows hours and hours of green, murky water instead of colorful habitats (of course, this green, murky tint is one of the reasons why we devote so much time towards saving this sea).

But then this summer something happened. During Oceana’s coastal expedition our experienced divers emerged from the waters outside the Swedish west coast, giggling euphorically, after what they called “the best dive they have ever experienced in this region”. The reason is that the underwater spot they just visited, inside a marine protected area, was full of corals and life.

And it seems as though it’s not only our divers that have taken the Baltic Sea into their hearts lately. When looking at the statistics of Oceana’s Flickr, we noticed that 8 of our 10 most viewed pictures ever are from the Baltic region. The most viewed one is a superb shot of two blue jellyfish outside the Swedish west coast, taken by the photography wizard Carlos Minguell. The picture is actually from this year’s Baltic Sea expedition, and yet it tops the list of our all-time most viewed pictures. So, even though our part of the world might not be as striking or direct in revealing its beauty, it’s a winner in the long term.
