Overview
The Calpe expedition is part of Oceana’s efforts to support marine conservation and sustainable fisheries in the western Mediterranean.
The expedition will research the waters surrounding Peñón de Ifach in Calpe (Alicante, Spain), where Oceana is working alongside local fishers and authorities to support the creation of a 2.67 km² no-take marine reserve. Using ROVs and scuba surveys, the team will document the habitats and species found within the proposed protected area and gather underwater images and footage that can help demonstrate its ecological value.
The proposed reserve has already received support from the local fishing sector and municipal authorities. If established, it would protect spawning areas and rebuild fisheries resources. It would also contribute to Spain’s commitment to increase marine protection while helping sustain local fisheries.
