El Quark (también llamado Kvarken en inglés y sueco, y Merenkurkku en finés) es un estrecho en el Golfo de Botnia que separa Finlandia y Suecia. El área es uno de los pocos lugares en el mundo donde la tierra literalmente “brota del mar” debido a un proceso llamado levantamiento: la tierra, antes comprimida bajo el peso de miles de metros de hielo durante la última Edad del Hielo, vuelve a elevarse a un ritmo de casi un centímetro por año.
Estos procesos geológicos han contribuido a formar comunidades submarinas poco habituales en el Quark, caracterizadas por una mezcla de especies de aguas marinas, salobres y dulces, muchas de las cuales se encuentran en los límites de su distribución. El levantamiento de tierra también ha creado una sucesión de bahías marinas poco profundas que son puntos calientes de biodiversidad y productividad para la vida marina. El Quark proporciona puntos de alimentación y cría a muchos tipos de aves marinas, es una ruta natural de migración para el salmón y aloja al tímalo, un pez En Peligro Crítico que desova en el mar.
El Quark es más conocido en la actualidad pro su valor geológico y así, en 2000 fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco para proteger sobre todo sus características geológicas. Aunque cuenta con algunas áreas marinas protegidas, estas tienen diferentes objetivos y niveles de protección a la vida marina.
Oceana desarrolló trabajos de investigación en el Quark durante las expediciones al Báltico de 2011 y 2013 , que llamaron la atención sobre el valor de la biodiversidad de la zona. Ahora, Oceana regresa para estudiar el Quark con más detalle. Durante una expedición de 18 días, se desarrollarán trabajos científicos en el archipiélago mediante un equipo de buceadores profesionales, una cámara submarina de control remoto, toma de muestras del fondo y un dron.
