Are you smearing liver oil from endangered deep-sea sharks on yourself every morning and night?

Your reflex may be to answer: “Obviously not!” But the truth is, you don’t know, and European cosmetic companies aren’t required to tell you if the squalene (or squalane) they use as an emollient in your face cream comes from shark liver oil, or from plant-based alternatives.

We’re not happy about being kept in the dark, and neither should you be.

It’s been a while since we’ve updated you on where the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) stands. A few months ago, when the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted for sustainable fisheries in Europe, we saw the will of the people turn into reality. That future is not yet set in stone though, and as negotiations ramp up we’ve been working with our NGO colleagues to keep the pressure on decision makers ahead of next week’s meeting of the Council of Fisheries Ministers.

We’ve teamed up with WWF, FishFight, BirdLife, Paint a Fish, and Ocean2012 to get as many people on board to stop bankrupting our oceans and allow fish stocks in Europe to recover.

This interactive campaign allows you to send a message directly to your Fisheries Minister – we’ve already seen the power of citizens when the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly for a stronger Common Fisheries Policy a few months ago. The negotiations are now taking place, and now is not the time to loosen the pressure on our representatives. That’s why we need you to make your voice heard.

He wasn’t off mark. Did you know that, in terms of volume, the oceans occupy 99% of planet Earth? That’s why we wanted to honour this Earth Day by celebrating our incredible, mysterious oceans.
