Yet another day on land
Everyone ever doing field work at sea recognizes the feeling of frustration caused by multiple days of bad weather in a row. Beforehand you know those days will come and yet you hope this time it will be different. Well, it is not. Ever. One day every now and then is appreciated: the days at sea stretch way beyond normal office hours and the work is carried out 7 days/week, weather allowing, leaving very little time for other work, like keeping track on collected data, doing whatever maintenance work might be needed, going through samples, photographs and videos, not to mention everyday things like laundry. It is also nice to have time simply to rest or to go running etc. but after a couple of days, it gets boring: you watch the sea from the shore, hair blowing in the wind and you wish it would calm down.
This is where we are at the moment. Strong southern winds have forced us to stay on land for two days already. Another challenge we have in the Sound are the strong currents, which during normal conditions speed at up to 3 knots/h, and those get even stronger with these weather events. Luckily the forecast shows some improvement for the days to come, so hopefully our crew will soon be sailing again to discover the treasures of the Sound.
