FISHERIES EXPERT

OCEANA seeks an experienced, team worker Fisheries expert to be part of our European Science Department to develop and implement campaign activities on fisheries and marine conservation issues.

This position is initially for 12 months, based in our office in Copenhagen, Denmark.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will take responsibility for Oceana Baltic Sea fisheries campaign. The fisheries campaign focuses on unmanaged and unsustainable fisheries in the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat. The person is expected to follow the national, regional and EU-level discussion, initiate amendments and recommendations based on identified loopholes in regulations and practices as well as work with environmentally sound fisheries practices inside marine protected areas. The work will be carried-out in cooperation with other Oceana staff in Copenhagen, Brussels and Madrid offices.

 

Qualifications:

The candidate will have a degree in fisheries science, economics, ecology or a related discipline, and at least 3 years experience in policy and/or campaign work, preferably in fisheries, marine or environmental issues in the European Union. The position requires strong communication skills, both written and spoken.

We are looking for a natural communicator with excellent writing skills, a consummate team player with a strong interest in marine environmental issues, and capable of working independently.

The successful candidate will be able to think strategically, be self motivated and with the ability to work under pressure. Oceana is a multicultural and multi organizational NGO, therefore strong skills for team building and networking are required.

Knowledge on marine ecology, fisheries management and technical measures to reduce fisheries impact on marine wildlife, experience on work at sea or field work, readiness and quickness to develop works under short deadlines, ability to convert scientific knowledge, papers and documents into texts and speeches easy to understand for journalist, politicians and general public opinion and knowledge and experience in environment would be a distinct advantage.

Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English and in one of the languages spoken in the Baltic Sea. Swedish, Danish, or German is preferred. In addition Spanish and/or French are desirable.

Willingness to travel nationally and internationally is required.

The successful candidate will be a self motivated person with proven experience in marine ecology and marine wildlife, and ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure and respond promptly as necessary. The candidate will be working in a multicultural and multi organizational environment; therefore it will be required strong skills for team building and networking.
