Eye on Cancun

Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the international conferences going on that affect the issues we care about. ICCAT came to a close on the 27th – with terribly disappointing results for bluefin and swordfish, and relatively positive results for sharks – and today, COP16, the annual climate change conference, begins.

We are calling for the international community to reach a comprehensive, legally binding agreement on the CO2 emission reduction regime. Acidification and global warming, caused by increasing levels of CO2, are wreaking havoc on the oceans, destroying corals and impeding many marine organisms from building shells and skeletons. Only strong commitments from the international community can reverse this damaging trend. Check out an earlier blog entry that delves deeper into the acidification issue here: https://europe.oceana.org/en/eu/blog/2010/09/acidic-oceans

We also found a nifty “five minute” guide to help explain what will be taking place in Cancun. Check it out here, courtesy of The Ecologist.org: http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/686993/cancun_your_fiveminute_guide_to_the_cop16_climate_change_conference.html

Hopefully our world leaders put the future of this planet first, as they failed to do at the previous summit in Copenhagen. Until then, all eyes are on Cancun.
